Diwali is a celebration that unites people from all over the world, specifically those of Hindu, Sikh and Jain beliefs. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a 5 day celebration and symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness, celebrating peace, prosperity and the triumph of good over evil. Diwali brings people together for five days to shop, decorate, and enjoy feasts, fireworks, rituals and prayers (puja). It’s also the perfect time to send a Card for Diwali wishes to those you love and cherish.

How is Diwali celebrated?

For five days between mid-October and mid-November, over a billion people from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore and other places around the world with large Indian or Hindu populations come together to celebrate Diwali. Known as Diwali, or Dipawali, the Festival of Lights is India’s most important and biggest holiday of the year and gets its name from the row (avail) of clay lamps (deepa) that are lit outside homes to symbolise the inner light that protects from the spiritual darkness.

On Day One, people will clean their homes and shop for gold or kitchen utensils in belief they’ll bring good fortune to their home. On Day Two, people will decorate their homes with clay lamps and create and design patterns (rangoli) in coloured powders or sand on their floors. Day Three is the main day of the festival and it’s celebrated by families gathering together for prayer, a feast and firework festivities. On Day Four, gifts are exchanged from friends and families to celebrate the first day of the New Year. On Day Five, Brothers will visit their married sisters, who will provide them with love and a meal.

So, whether you celebrate the Festival of Lights or want to send a Diwali wish to someone who does, we have ideas to help you get that card written and ready in time for the festivities.

Helpful tip: Can I send a Diwali card if I don’t celebrate Diwali? The answer is Yes! Sending a card for Diwali is a thoughtful way to show you care.
