It’s summer time, so let’s get the barbeques fired up, get the garden sun-bathing ready… and watch it rain, because even though we’re ready to feel the heat, we also can’t control the weather! But even if the weather outside is a bit wet, you can still entertain yourself and the little ones, and we’ve made a list to get you inspired!

So, whether you and your partner want to do something a little silly on your day off, or you need ideas to keep your toddler entertained for an extra few hours, here are some rainy day activity ideas for you.

Build an Indoor Den or Blanket Fort

Grab all the blankets, pillows and duvets then push the sofas together, it’s time to build an indoor den!  Make it a magnificent one by adding fairy lights for atmosphere and cushions on the floor to make it nice and cosy. Next, have the kids create their own sign to tape to the entrance showing the name of the fort or even the old school ‘Keep Out!’ message. Make sure there’s plenty of snacks, story-telling and watch out…the floor is lava! The days of the soft play center will be long forgotten as the little ones use their imaginations to rule over their new kingdom.

Craft and Baking Day

Get out the googly-eyes and the old toilet roll tubes because it’s time to get crafty! There are so many wonderful and easy crafty projects you can do that will keep the kids entertained for hours. Why not get out the paints and have the kids paint a picture of their rainy day? Or stick colourful pom-poms to half a paper plate to make a rainbow? Or even better, get baking! From cookies to chocolate cake, get the little ones involved and learning a new skill, and give yourself a treat too!

And make sure you check out our fantastic printable colouring sheets at the bottom of this page, they’re fun and FREE!

Indoor Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Set the table and invite the guests (your child’s favourite teddies and toys) and gather round for the most important event of the year, an indoor picnic! This is the perfect way to give the kids their dinner. You could even go that extra step by having a theme, from the natural outdoors to mermaids. Decorate the table and get everyone dressed up for the occasion. For adults, why not bring a touch of elegance to your indoor picnic with a homemade afternoon tea? Fill a cupcake stand full of sandwiches, scones, cakes and your favourite fruit, fill up the teapot and tuck in!

Rest and Relaxation Day

Why not have a spa day without the price tag? Light a candle, put on a face mask, soak your hair in a hair mask, moisturise and put some cucumber on your eyes! With your favourite music or podcast playing in the background, this is the perfect indoor activity for adults wanting to de-stress from the day-to-day, or an easy way to get the kids to slow down too. And whilst you’re waiting for the moisturiser to work its magic, why not grab the duvets and stick a movie on?

Brave the Elements

Grab the wellies, put on those waterproofs and go find a big puddle. Rain doesn’t have to be miserable, it can be fun, exciting and can transform the landscape around you! The rain has been inspirational for many artists, painters, writers and adventurers, can it do the same for you? Go exploring, make paper boats and watch them race down the street, build mud pies, feed the ducks in the local park (after all it’s perfect weather for them!), maybe even write poetry! Get out of the house, get into nature and brave the outside world.

We hope these ideas have sparked inspiration for a wet bank holiday, and if the sun makes a surprise appearance, then just save this list for a rainy day!
